Before we dive into the specifics of kitchen remodel costs, we need to create a framework. Having a framework in mind will help us better understand the cost of kitchen remodels and therefore allow you to create a budget that’s specific to the scope of your remodel project.

Moreover, since everyone has a different level of quality in mind, knowing the major components of a kitchen remodel will help you better understand where you’d like to splurge — and where you might cut on costs.

The major components (and areas of spending) on a kitchen remodel include:

  • Cabinetry
  • Countertops
  • Appliances
  • Flooring
  • Plumbing features
  • Painting and finishing touches

We based our cost estimates on a kitchen that’s 200 square feet, with 30 linear feet of cabinetry, and 60 square feet of countertops. As such, take note that these dimensions are rough estimates for a typical high-end kitchen remodel.

High-end kitchen remodel costs

High-end kitchen remodel costs tend to be about $135,000. Let’s break that number down.

To start, high-end kitchen remodels cost more than minor (or budget) kitchen remodels. When we say “high-end,” think top-quality kitchens, the type that would be featured in an architecture or home remodeling magazine.

With a high-end kitchen remodel, expect cabinets to be replaced, layouts to be changed, plumbing or electrical changes adjusted, and other structural changes.

With cabinets like components, expect custom cabinets, luxury woods (like black walnut), stacked cabinets, pantry cabinets, glass doors, custom lighting, bars, and tall (or double) kitchen islands.

Expect larger 48-inch luxury ranges, cooktops, and ovens, a built-in refrigerator, brand-new flooring, stone-laid countertops, designer luxury sinks and faucets, and painted ceilings with fresh trim.

Here’s a sample breakdown of each component:

  • Cabinetry: About $85,000
  • Countertops: About $150 per square foot
  • Appliances: $28,000 to $29,000 for a luxury fridge, fuel range, under-counter wine storage space, microwave space, and dishwasher
  • Plumbing-related fixtures: About $2,500
  • Painting and finishing touches: About $1,000
  • Flooring: About $5 per square foot for material; About $2.50 per square foot for installation costs

Mid-range kitchen remodel costs

A picture of a finished high end kitchen remodel

About $65,000: that’s the cost of a mid-range kitchen remodel. When discussing the price of a kitchen remodel, mid-range kitchen costs tend to be less than higher-end kitchen remodels.

When planning a kitchen remodel, a mid-range kitchen remodel is considered the traditional and popular choice for kitchen remodels.

The cabinets are high quality. The custom cabinets have under-cabinet lighting.

Appliances might include a new range, a cooktop, or an oven. Aside from cabinetry and appliances, part of the renovation process involves new countertops, higher-end sinks and faucets, a tile backsplash, and finished painted walls, trim, and ceilings.

Here’s a sample breakdown based on each component cost:

  • Cabinetry: About $45,000
  • Countertops: About $75 per square foot
  • Appliances: $12,000 total for a stand-alone fridge, wall oven unit fuel range, cooktop, and dishwasher
  • Plumbing-related fixtures: About $1,500
  • Painting and finishing touches: About $750
  • Flooring: About $2.50 per square foot for material and $2.50 per square foot for installation costs

Minor/budget kitchen remodel costs

If you’re not quite interested in a full renovation but would still like to transform your kitchen with a major kitchen remodel, you can consider a minor kitchen renovation.

A minor — or budget — kitchen remodel doesn’t include changing the layout. More of a facelift than a gut renovation, a minor kitchen remodel leaves existing cabinetry in place.

Instead, in a budget remodel, your general contractor and architecture team commit to the following:

  • Painting, resurfacing, and/or replacing cabinet doors.
  • Installing new, stock, and ready-to-assemble, semi-custom cabinets.
  • Adding new appliances, such as a new range, cooktop, oven, slide-in refrigerator, floors, and countertop
  • A new mid-sized kitchen sink and faucet

A budget kitchen remodel may not land itself on the front cover of a kitchen renovation project spread in an architecture magazine, but kitchen design experts agree that you can still have a stunning kitchen without a full, high-end renovation.

In short, with a minor or budget kitchen remodel, the total cost of materials and labor is less than a mid-range or high-end kitchen remodel.

See for yourself the costs of most budget kitchen remodels:

  • Cabinets: About $13,500 for ready-to-install cabinets
  • Countertop: About $1,200
  • Appliances: About $5,200
  • Flooring: About $900-$1,000

Besides the cost of countertop materials — such as natural stone or laminate — the following two considerations can affect your kitchen remodel cost estimate.

  1. Construction fees
  2. Cabinetry

While kitchen design affects remodeling costs, the construction of the design can add to the total cost of a project.

For example, removing a wall or — adding new structures —can add anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000 to an average kitchen remodel cost.

As a result, adding cabinets makes up the bulk of the costs of most kitchen remodeling projects.

The bottom line is that the more structural and engineering plans are needed — and the more time your construction team has to spend on building the plans — the more money you should plan to invest in a luxury kitchen remodel.

On the flip side, to lower costs on a home renovation, consider whether structural changes are needed or whether your remodel budget can accommodate structural changes.

As with any remodel, you’ll also want to account for the design process, the topic of our next section.

5 design elements affecting costs of high-end kitchen remodels

Creative ideation: it’s the foundation of what makes a beautiful new kitchen. When brainstorming ideas for your kitchen remodel, you’ll need to budget for the time needed to ideate a beautiful new kitchen design.

Five design elements tend to influence kitchen construction project costs.

Table: Design elements in high-end kitchen renovation costs

1. Your kitchen materials manufacturer of choice
2. The type of materials used
3. The type of cabinets used
4. Number of cabinets
5. New kitchen items

1. Your kitchen materials manufacturer of choice

How much a kitchen remodel costs depends on the materials you use. And, the cost of materials will depend on which manufacturer you and your general contractor choose.

Also, depending on the brand name or quality of the product, the labor for the same square footage renovation may differ.

2. Types of material used

Even if the project scope is the same, whether you use premium versus standard-grade materials will affect the total cost of your kitchen remodel.

Particle boards versus plywood, and laminate versus granite: deciding between your material options will give you a better idea of the overall cost of your kitchen renovation project.

3. Type of kitchen cabinets used

Full-height cabinets with doors compared to standard pull-out drawers: the latter tends to cost more. When you add boxes, drawers, and the infrastructure for drawers to glide (not to mention labor costs), the cost of cabinetry adds up.

Since cabinetry tends to be the most expensive item on a kitchen renovation checklist — no matter the kitchen size — do your research before choosing which type of cabinets you want for your kitchen renovation project.

4. Number of cabinets

Just one more quick note on cabinetry: the more cabinets you add, the greater the cost to renovate and remodel a kitchen.

For example, adding two smaller cabinets that are the same size as one large cabinet will cost more than adding one large cabinet alone. As part of your total kitchen renovation cost, keep in mind that the cost of cabinetry depends on the linear square footage of the cabinetry in your kitchen space.

5. Kitchen items included

Hardwood floors, kitchen sinks, and the size of a kitchen can impact design costs. The size of your kitchen remodel will also impact the bottom line number for your remodel.

If you know the manufacturers you want to use for each component in your kitchen remodel, consider looking at the manufacturer’s website for parts numbers, model numbers, and pricing.

Most appliance manufacturers will make this information available to the public. That way, you can make more informed decisions before and as your renovation unfolds.

How does a kitchen’s design affect total kitchen remodel costs?

A kitchen’s design can affect the type of materials used, the painting and finishing of the project, and the manufacturer’s quality control processes.

For example, a new kitchen design that involves what we call a rip-and-replace kitchen remodel — that is, a structural overhaul of the kitchen’s foundation — costs more than simply a new paint job or installing new kitchen appliances.

The design of a kitchen can affect overall cost efficiency when executing a kitchen remodel.

What’s the most expensive part of a high-end kitchen remodel?

The cost of cabinetry, construction, and labor bar none are some of the most expensive items of a high-end kitchen remodel.

What can I do to prepare for kitchen remodeling construction?

Assuming you did your research, spoke with your construction firm, and have a strong budget and project management in place, now all that’s left to do is prepare for construction on your kitchen.

Before beginning a kitchen renovation or remodel, consider the following:

  • Declutter your living space
  • Protect any furniture or appliances with plastic sheeting
  • Arrange for temporary living or dining arrangements (if needed)
  • Communicate often with your general contractor and construction firm
  • Prepare a contingency plan should plans goes awry
